Ed van der Elsken | The camera in love
Still on view until 21 May 2017 at the Stedelijk in Amsterdam.
Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990).
The exhibition “The camera in love” shows a comprehensive overview of his work.
“Ed van der Elsken was a unique figure. As a street photographer, he went to cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Tokyo in search of self-confident people, beautiful girls and contrarian youth. Van der Elsken’s photographs and films are strong in form, unmistakably rooted in their time, but at the same time timeless. Ed van der Elsken was able to document and influence the ‘Zeitgeist’. In his work he developed a direct, unconventional and personal style. Van der Elsken’s presence is always visible in his work, contact was essential for him to be able to make an image. He also often staged a situation as a playful dynamic art director. – See more at: stedelijk-museum-amsterdam”
The exhibition is clearly structured and clearly shows the different periods in the artist’s life. The many video and slide presentations are spatially arranged and give a beautiful look into van der Elsken’s experience of the world.
Tip: find a quiet moment to visit the exhibition, on the Saturday afternoon that we were there it was very busy!
